Glad to see The Hit there. Was surprised you didn’t list have that film on your list. Had to include it on mine. Absolutely brilliant film. Have a man crush on Terrence Stamp.

Eddie Coyle! Another brilliant film. Peter Yates. Mother, Jugs, and Speed. The Deep. Bullitt. Breaking Away. Solid, just solid films.

BTW, Alien 3 wasn’t that bad. If you’re comparing it to the two previous entries, it doesn’t hold up. On it’s own though, I love it. Alien: Resurrection is a whole other story.

Another thing…”Picture Book”…catchiest song EVER? Methinks so. I dare you to listen to it and NOT have it rolling through your head while falling asleep. Two weeks later. ;0)

    • I love that whole album and indeed all the B sides on that 3 disc set. Misty Water? (nearly in Hot Fuzz). People Take Pictures Of Each Other?

But my fav is Do You Remember Walter? Beautiful and a bit sad.

      • Radical AdZ

OMFG, Edgar! I LOVE Misty Water. What’s more, I have this theory that it’s all about this family of women (“Maria’s daughters”) who grow weed and are always smoking bongs. Not, I suppose, a common theory, but I think it fits the song. 😉

        • I think Misty Water is supposed to be about alcohol.

There’s a fantastic cover by The Buff Medways of that song too.

Again, another track considered for HOT FUZZ.

If I had to pick my fav. Kinks song….. Till The End Of The Day

      • Slick

“Walter” is an absolute classic! I have friends who think if the Kinks as a ’70s band. And there’s a ton of their stuff I ADORE from then (and from the ’80s, like “Destroyer” and “Come Dancing”), but the ’60s-era Kinks stuff is just sublime. “Preservation Society” is their best from then, I think.

        • Slick

Oh, incidentally Edgar, I’ll be watching THE HIT, TRAINSPOTTING and BUGSY MALONE for the first time today.

ah i like your unpacking photos - as in the day youve got your dvd colection out and are feeling at home.

i had an intense kinks phase around 91-93 (and obviously still have great affection for them)

and - COFFEE! also, what a quaint tablecloth - are you staying with a great aunt?

ps i love your weight fluctuations (which are barely perceptible) also it’s good to play ‘beardy or non-beardy’ as you press play on the latst vlog!

    Mornin’ Edgar
I noticed ‘The Low Down’ in your top ten yesterday, just saw it the other week on Film 4, a great slice of life film and it’s re-ignited my Kate Ashfield crush.

Have you seen ‘late night shopping’ and if so what did you think?
im after a copy of that on dvd for my next purchase, Im really getting into these small quiet kind of movies that make a nice change from big loud blockbuster movies.

Although saying that, only two more days till i can see District 9,cant wait, bring on the noise, bring on the alien fx, woohoo.

    • The Low Down was single handedly responsible for Kate’s casting in SHAUN. Both myself and Pegg developed a deep Ashfield crush with that film.

      • pieface

the first thing i saw kate ashfield in was a comedy drama with alan davies, he played a jingles writer (i only really remember the one for dog food) and she was the love interest. i loved it, partly for the setting i think - muswell hill.

      • angle

She’s got such a natural acting style too which makes her believable in whatever role she plays in, she deserves more leading roles.

        • pieface

well i hated even using the description ‘love interest’, but such is tv land sometimes.
the other week i saw her in an incredibly serious BBC4 dramatisation about Iraq, took me couple of minutes to realise who it was!

      • SarahAC

Do you always crush on your leading ladies Edgar?
Kate for Shaun & MEW for SP.
I’m going to hazard a guess at Cate Blanchett for Hot Fuzz? Julia Deakin for Spaced?…and I’m torn between Jennifer & Dawn for French and Saunders.

        • Saunders! I always had a bit of a teen crush on her from their very first BBC series.

          • pieface

            Raw Sex!

and Jennifer’s giant Wagonwheel eating has got to be one of my favourite moments of telly of all time.

          • SarahAC

You have good taste Edgar. Have you seen Jen lately? She is looking foxier than ever!
I saw the French & Saunders live show last month and developed a little girl-crush on her

Anything by the Criterion Collection has got to be cool!! You didn’t already own a copy of Alien, Edgar?

    • I have the old Special Edition. Never had the Quadrilogy. Not too bothered with 3 & 4.

      • BenjaminReid

I’m holding out for the blu ray which is supposed to be coming out sometime next year. I can tolerate three only because it’s directed by David Fincher but both kind of stink. I can’t even bare to watch Resurrection. Hopefully this new Ridley Scott prequel won’t stink as bad as the last few entries 🙂

What do you like better, Alien or Aliens?

        • I love both Alien or Aliens, but if I had to pick one - it would be ALIEN. If anything it gets more impressive with each passing year.

          • Edgar, you should get the Quadrilogy. The Documentary for Alien 3 is brilliant - you get to see what a great film it would have been and then how the studio screwed it up (and they still think they’re right) worth it just for that.

          • Jacobunny

I say Alien for sure! Aliens, though a great film, is not on the same level. Alien has a such a strong thread of tension running through it the whole film that just doesn’t let up; brilliant.

          • Jesse

I just watched the Alien films again recently and seeing the documentaries on them are really interesting. Epically the one for Alien and how it came to be, and how there was just one connected set for the entire ship to make the actors feel closed off and claustrophobic, amazing stuff. You should check it out.

And I also love how for the big box set of all the films, Alien 3 and Resurrection have these “extended cuts” but really it’s just longer versions of the film that fox made for the hell or it and the two directors didn’t even want them on the disk.

          • What with your background in gore I’m sure the android “blood” appealed to you 🙂

        • BenjaminReid

I think I like them both on the same level. Maybe the first a little bit more. Despite having similar characters and motifs, I love the horror and suspense of the original but the adrenaline rush induced by its sequel is absolutely mindblowing. I think the original was much more interesting than the sequel but really, it’s kind of like comparing the Lindsay Anderson films if… to O Lucky Man (or apples to oranges). There are very few sequels that have come out, specifically of horror films, that accomplished as much as Aliens. The Original was the masterpiece and the sequel shaped the franchise.

  • God bless Amoeba and the cheap Criterions (Criterions? Criteria? Boutique brands shouldn’t make me feel confused). I picked up Le Samourai and The Red Shoes on my last visit, as well as a DVD of short films - one of which, it turned out, was an Oscar-winner written and directed by Peter Capaldi from “The Thick of It” and “In The Loop”. Nice surprise there.
With this blog, a feature in Film Comment and general DVD browsing, Eddie Coyle’s suddenly come into my radar about five times this past month. I should pick it up just to shut fate up.

I won’t even get to process that you replied back to me until tomorrow

    • Oh no. I regret mentioning that on my Facebook update. Especially mistakenly calling Oh No They Didn’t a ‘fansite’.

I actually read out a printout to the crew on set of the detailed discussion of my weight fluctuations. They found it quite amusing.

I think I will stay behind the cameras in future!

I’ve listened to the CD version of My Weakness is Strong on repeat for about 5 days straight. Anyone have a favorite bit?

    • A combination of Amoeba, Bay Street Video and the mighty Rotate This!

      • orangebandage

ah Rotate This! a wonderful gem. Right up there with Sonic Boom, conveniently located right near the Bloor cinema with it’s therapeutic clicking noises of people flicking through cd and dvd cases in the used section. Found the Fight Club soundtrack hidden within those racks.

Oh and did you know that Hot Fuzz is finally coming to Blu-ray this month?
