October 9th, 2009

Thanks to all who came to my double bill of DON’T LOOK NOW and CARRIE at the Prince Charles last night. It was a treat to see it with a full house.

I got in touch with Nic Roeg to see if he wanted to come down to talk about DON’T LOOK NOW. He couldn’t attend, but sent me this very nice e-mail with a message to read out on the night.

“It is so sad that the cinema, in general, is losing its mesmerizing, private and personal time base. There is nothing like sitting in a dark unfamiliar place among strangers, and watching events from a story taking place on a screen where everything and everyone involved is magnified and enlarged over two or three times their natural size. It’s like being a ghost spying on reality.

For those of you who have already seen it on DVD, I hope the movie on the screen translates into a new experience.

Thanks for coming……….Nic”

On the topic of supporting cinemas I’d like to recommend that if anyone is in (or near) Melbourne Australia they really must visit The Astor Theater http://www.astor-theatre.com.au/

They are screening The Blues Brothers this Friday! Can’t wait!

The cinema is still one of my fave places to be. It’s one of the few things I love to do on my own, even. Entirely magical and transformative. There’s loads of classic films I’m still hoping I have the chance to see on the big screen some day, including CARRIE and DON’T STOP NOW. Hmm, maybe I should contact my local old cinema and see if they’ll play them? Can’t hurt to make suggestions, surely? :0)

That’s an ace email from Nic Roeg i missed your intro, didn’t get there till about 7.30. I really enjoyed seeing both films on the big screen especially Carrie, & thanks for signing my calendar. I’m going to make the effort to get down to London for another one of your double bills, i’m really looking forward to Riki Oh, if you end up showing it. Thanks again for last night, it was good to be one of the few people to see your Bluetones clip 😀 Cool photo btw.

I share Mr. Roeg’s sentiments. Watching a flick in a theater among strangers is an experience you cannot recreate in your living room. Particularly if it’s a flick you grew up with.

An art house movie theater opened up near my university, and I’ve gone to see showings of “Back to the Future,” (Favorite movie of all time) “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Blues Brothers,” and “Monty Python & The Holy Grail.” They were easily the best showings of those flicks I’ve ever seen.

    Long live the Theater!

I love movie theater &I agree words from great director Nicolas Roeg.
By the way, ‘DON’T LOOK NOW’ is called ‘Akai Kage’ in japan.
    It means ‘Red Shadow’.

  • Awesome. His sentiment is what makes me sad that I can’t see Shaun when the AFI theater in Silver Spring, MD, USA at the end of the month. I love the movie, but the 4-?? hour drive north from university is a killer. Some other weekend.

But cheers! is sounds like things were awesome. And that headline is the bee’s knees.

I was there with my younger sister, it was a treat waiting for her to jump out of her seat at the endings of both films, neither of which she’d seen before

  • Actually got to see “Don’t Look Now” at the Brattle Theater in Boston when I was a freshman in college, and it is still one of the most singular and chilling experiences I’ve had in a theater. It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it, or if I see ANYONE in a red raincoat.

    • Juliarrr

i know exactly what you mean about the raincoat =S
the ending with the wrinkly dwarf lady and the cleaver made me poo myself (not literally just like to add) although, the movie’s so well done i can’t hate my brother for recommending it to me =D

Was there, loved it. Not sure about the creepy bluetones bit!

See you all at the next one 🙂

    • The fact that you referred to it as ‘the creepy Bluetones bit’ makes my day.

      What creeped you out?

      • Max

When watching it the edits seemed like you had cut it yourself slightly but wasn’t sure. So either a) it was eerie luck or you did adjust the edit slightly which means there’s a murdering dwarf prevalent in your vision of a bluetones song, also slightly eerie.

But then I still jumped at the end of carrie, so perhaps the evening unsettled me as a whole.

Ps. I love dead zone with c walken too.

        • I did do a few edits - but not too many…

          • Slick

Any chance this Blue Tones thing will see the light of day in another fashion? One that more of us might see? I’m really intrigued now.
