Hah! This picture encapsulates so much of my past week! The past two nights, I’ve watched Duck Soup and Animal Crackers. I’m putting together a concert with various numbers from musicals around then. I hope the DVD included something on Michael Kidd’s choreography for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. And a friend of mine just wrote an article about “Streets of Fire” for a series he’s doing on ‘high concept trainwrecks’ of the ’80s. I so enjoyed watching this one with him and play the peanut gallery. I love Amy Madigan’s character constantly ending unveiled threats with “If you know what I mean.” Also, Willem Dafore with his architectural hair do. That man can work any look. http://www.overthinkingit.com/2009/09/03/streets-of-fire/
Ah the beautiful Thelma Todd! There’s a really good Tom Waits song called “Dead and Lovely” (Real Gone, 2004) that I’d bet is about her and her unfortunate end. Elegant song.
ah the musicals of the 50’s brilliant! I just bought An American in Paris on Blu-ray. I need to get Singing in the Rain. I love Gene Kelly. Edgar have you seen this?
Happy birthday. ^_^ I flushed a cake (well, a slice) a couple of weeks ago; on paper it sounds utterly ridiculous, and it is, but in practice that ridiculousness is what makes it so fun.
That’s it, I’m going to have a “DVDs Edgar Has Mentioned in His Blogs” marathon. I’m sure it’ll be very entertaining. I’ve already seen Duck Soup, though; it was the first movie to show me that not everything in black and white is boring.
There is the 1960’s and the 1970’s out on DVD and they also have a 80’s. 90’s and 00’s out - the 70’s one is great - the newest one is a let down, they tried to cover to much in one dvd.
Yeah, I got them on Amazon, sadly our local store quit stocking them after the 60’s - there is also a 2 disc set “A Musical History” I have not seen that one yet.
I just got The Busby Berkeley Collection Volume 1 and 2 finally, maybe my favorite stuff, so amazing.
i know very few people who like Walter Hill’s movies so this photo is reassuring. i’ll take Extreme Prejudice over Streets of Fire though. maybe thats just cause of my Nick Nolte man crush.
hmmm…streets of fire doesn’t seem to fit quite right with the others!
think the last time i attempted to watch a few Marx brothers films one after the other i found it hard to keep track of whats going on….because there is A LOT going on!
Good stuff on the left and right, although what’s in the middle? The display on my phone is too small to see with human eyes - (how lame does that sound!?)
That Marx Brothers collection looks epicly awesome. Streets on Fire looks pretty “good” as well. Mainly because the first billed is a guy I’ve never even heard of, lolz
Alongside his classic 48 Hrs, Walter Hill’s Streets Of Fire, is one of my fave American films of the eighties. May have to dig them out now for a double bill at some point this week.
Anything with Willem Dafoe is automatically in some sick way hilarious. I can actually do a perfect Willem Dafoe impersonation. I’d show you if I could Edgar.

The fact that you like Streets Of Fire has made my grinch heart grow three sizes this day.

Streets of Fire is AWESOME. The Streets of Fire soundtrack is AWESOME. AWESOME levels maxed out with that group of films.
Marx Brothers! Duck Soup is my favorite. Hail Freedonia!

I’m not saying that all the DVD’s I’ve watched are classics. So don’t blame me if that particular marathon is filled with a few head scratchers.
That said, DUCK SOUP is one for the ages. Simply one of the best comedy films of all time.
Hey, sometimes you need to watch a few head-scratchers to make you really appreciate the decent ones.
hail, hail Freedonia, land of the brave and free
Get tired of Battlestar Galactica, Edgar?
And in response to one of your more recent tweets, I haven’t seen season 1 of the Wire either :/
Streets Of Fire looks fun.
It took you that long to get the Marx Brothers set Edgar? Shame!
You say that like I haven’t seen them before!
I watched them have many times. Indeed I spent much of my teens watching MONKEY BUSINESS.
Not every DVD displayed is being watched for the first time, let it be said.
mmm yoda he say ‘watched them have I many times. much enjoyment them from. mmm.’
*sarcy emoticon*
(hows come there are 2 edgars?)
All taken back then. I hope your copy of Monkey Business isn’t as choppy as the American box set version is.
I dressed up as Groucho for Halloween a few years back. People thought I was Borat. Kids these days.
Get started on Ant-man already Edgar! Read some comics!!!!
The Marx Brothers are awesome, i love Room Service, Duck Soup & Monkey Business.
Are you going to watch the 60’s,70s.80s ?
Sadly. There is no 60’s, 70’s or 80’s edition
Edgar -

Really? Did not know - must get them.

Every time I see the Marx Brothers, I think of my fave Queen album, NIGHT AT THE OPERA. I should really see the film that inspired the album name.
I haven’t seen Streets of Fire in so long I don’t even remember what happens. That makes me want to go rent it.
I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the Marx Brothers, but I think I’ve previously declared my deep love for Gene Kelly. The man was sexy!
This reminds me, tell your friend Chris Cunningham to make a film already.
I didn’t think another person existed who loved both the Marx Brothers and Streets of Fire besides me.
i really enjoy STREETS OF FIRE. is it here s something you like or something you’re checking out on a whim?
i know very few people who like Walter Hill’s movies so this photo is reassuring. i’ll take Extreme Prejudice over Streets of Fire though. maybe thats just cause of my Nick Nolte man crush.
Who’s Michael Pare? Never heard of him! Is this film a good illustration of his talents? Worth seeing?
hmmm…streets of fire doesn’t seem to fit quite right with the others!

Marx brothers, ey? I’ve never really been a fan…
At least you’re getting some much needed time off though. When do you hit the edit room?
I LOVE that Marx Brothers box set. Check out the other one with Night At the Opera and Go West. Lots of cool extras.
“It’s alright, it’s just the Tarzan in me. ARR-ARR-ARR-ARRGH!!”
Marx Bros.! Capital! Just discovered this site BTW… love your work and your excellent input on Trailers From Hell.
ah, moving on to the 50’s now arent we? are you taking up dance edgar? are you making a new version of a chorus line? Spill the beans edgar
Good stuff on the left and right, although what’s in the middle? The display on my phone is too small to see with human eyes - (how lame does that sound!?)
Monkey Business! I was just thinking about that earlier today because they talk about it in 12 Monkeys!
Marx Brothers! One of the greatest things known to man.
She has eyes that folks adore so, and a torso even more so!
OK I know you don’t have “At the Circus” in there but I like that song. And Kermit the Frog did a killer version of it too!

OMG! Streets of Fire. I need to see that film again.
