Wow, I’ve put “Clean, Shaven” postcard in my schedule book as a book cover.
I am Japanese and usually we learn the story “Rashomon” by Ryunosuke Akutagawa at the class of national language at an elementary school student :) I was very attracted by the story anyway.

  2. SarahAC says:

I really must read some of those 33 1/3 books.
Coincidentally enough I just entered a competition a few days ago to win the “One Step Beyond” one.
That might be a good place to start (if I win it)

  3. biLL says:

rashomon is awesome, when the samurai and bandit have a flinchy medieval slapfest, that’s tops.

  4. FairyGodmoose says:

Ah, I remember watching Rashomon. To be honest, I didn’t like it very much; I prefer Seven Samurai. Maybe that’s because I’m too simple-minded. -_-’

  5. Cody says:

Mifune + Kurosawa for the win! Beautiful movie. Every time I watch a Kurosawa and that Janus Films pops up at the beginning I get chills.

  6. Neil says:

I literally just started a paper on Kurosawa today, very nice choice, though I would say Yojimbo/Sanjuro are my favorites as of yet

on the bowie album debate.. I’m going with Diamond Dogs

  7. Sarah5636 says:

I have Kagemusha which i haven’t got round to watching yet, also Dreams looks interesting too.

I forgot to mention on your blog the other day i don’t know if you’ve already seen it but Herzog did a documentary called Encounters At The End Of The World, which looks amazing i’m looking forward to watching it.

    • Sarah5636 says:

Of course Wild Zero, why didn’t i think of that & i only watched it the other night, thought i was awesome by the way Ed, & Versus i’d totally forgotten about that movie aswell. I couldn’t have come up with a list like that, it’s ace having you around Ed as our movie mastermind :D

      • Jacobunny says:

        Wild Zero! Hell yes!
I hunted down the region 4 DVD, found out it didn’t exist but was going to be released a few months later and so preordered it (about a year or two ago) on the strength of this review by Chris Sims.

It is almost as awesome as the film and is a must read! I have since subjected many friends to WZ - though my wife refuses to go near it even though I made her listen to the review above which I read out to her (?!?). The Japanese girlfriend of one of my film-buddies wasn’t so sure about it either after we watched it…

  8. kyle taylor vs. ?????? ?????? says:

    • Sarah5636 says:

Two spring to mind check out Let Sleeping Corpses Lie that’s a good one, & of course Dead Snow if you haven’t already brought it :)

      • Edgar Wright says:

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie may be my favourite non Romero zombie film.

Dead Snow I haven’t seen. Haven’t seen too many zombie films of late. I need a zombie break after Shaun.

        • AYBG says:

Hey Edgar, I’m going to the University of Winchester in a couple of weeks - Film Studies, I hope you approve :)
Anywho, the reason I bring it up is I’m on a quest to get everyone to call it “The Winchester”, and so far so good :P

    • Edgar Wright says:

      You’re missing…

      White Zombie
      I Walked With A Zombie
      Plague Of The Zombies
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (aka LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE) - great, great 70’s zombie film
REC - (watch this instead of Quarantine)
      Wild Zero
      Versus
      The Beyond (amazing zombie climax)
The NOTLD Savini remake has it’s moments
Zombi 2 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters)

      Will think on some more…

But there’s some missing from your collection.

    • SarahA says:

I haven’t seen it yet, but “Colin” is supposed to be pretty good.

      • pieface says:

Colin is now a zombie? Daisy will be upset. poor Colin, guess that night on the heath really did do something to him then.

    • LastOfTheV8Interceptors says:

Would de Ossorio’s Blind Dead series qualify? … and Wild Zero is a must have for the drinking game alone.

    • joel vallie says:

Here are some zombie movies I liked that no one has mentioned
      Dance of the Dead
      Dead and Deader
      Flight of the Living Dead
      The Zombie Diaries
      Undead or Alive

Dead Snow was already mentioned but Ill put it on again so you don’t forget to watch it because it is one of the better ones.

also if you want to go back a bit theres
(1964) I Eat Your Skin. This one makes me laugh because I’m a Spanish speaker and the actors in this movie butcher the language and it makes me laugh plus the Zombies look like buggy eyed crack heads.
1941 King of the Zombies. This movie I watch every couple years because it makes me laugh. You’ll have to watch it to know what I mean.

I have a huge list of bad zombie movies but thats on another day.

  9. SarahA says:

Hey Edgar, all these movies you’re watching, is it downtime before editing, or are you gathering ideas for editing SP or for the next project?

  10. Jared B says:

Edgar, Why don’t you do an update with 3 albums.
I know you are a music guy as well.

  11. BenjaminReid says:

Do you have a region free DVD player or an american/british dvd player because I heard that the criterion collection is exclusive to North America (specifically the USA)?

  12. joel vallie says:

I’m not sure if your watching some of these for the first time or not so but let us know how that Clean,Shaven is.

  13. Slick says:

BLACK SABBATH, the flick that inspired the name for possibly the greatest (and definitely the first) heavy metal band.

And thank God for it, too. Otherwise classics like “Paranoid” and “The Wizard” would be by the band Earth.

    Oy vey.

  14. ShirkerD says:

Not the way ‘I’ remember it.,

    Doh!

  15. ShirkerD says:

Marge: But you love Japan. You like Rashomon
Homer: That’s not the way remember it.

  16. Jacobunny says:

Edgar, what are your thoughts on Clean Shaven? I really enjoyed Keane. All the extreme close-up handheld shots (in the first 30mins) of Damian Lewis’ face on the big screen started to unbalance my headspace so I began to feel a sense of connnection to the William Keane character. Never got round to looking up Kerrigan’s debut effort. Guessing I should?

  17. Red says:

I’d like to see Rashomom, have always heard it was great.

I’ve never read any of the 33 1/3 books, but might have to order some now.

  18. Amber G says:

Black Sabbath… on my list as top horror flicks

speaking of Sabbath… there is a Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality: 33 1/3 By:John Darnielle

  19. LastOfTheV8Interceptors says:

Sorry to post twice but is that Bava collection still available? The artwork on it is way better than any collections I have. Region is not an issue. Thanks!

  20. LastOfTheV8Interceptors says:

Black Sabbath! One of my faves… the Drop of Water segment is THE most chilling sequence ever captured on celluloid. Period. Can’t watch it at night and I have to psych myself up to watch it during the day. (I’ve even bookmarked pages in my Bava book so I can avoid looking at “the face”) God I love Bava.

  21. Martin says:

Rashomon and Mario Bava - now that’s some cocktail! Is Black Sabbath worth watching?

    • Amber G says:

why yes Black Sabbath is well worth a watch :)

I watched Castle Freak this past week….. last time I saw that I was 16…

  22. Merus says:

Man, everyone says Rashomon is a great film, but I don’t remember it being that good.

    >_>

  23. Tilda Swinton seems to have stole Bowie’s look from that one, or perhaps it’s the other way around!!!!!

  24. Breanne says:

Of the 4, I’ve only seen Rashomon. Saw it done as a play as well — also very good. Such great storytelling.

  25. Rachel says:

I really want to get “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” and “Highway 61 Revisited” 33 1/3 books. I love me some Bowie as well, though. It’s all about Hunky Dory. What a perfect album!

  26. Simon M says:

Interesting story behind Bowie’s Berlin trilogy - at one point he was just eating Chilli and Milk. A suggestion for your diet during post-production perhaps?

  27. Sam_Clements says:

I do love Rashamon - and on a semi related note, think Low is my favourite Bowie album…
