Edgar

A Month of Matinees continues with the British film director Edgar Wright. Making his name as the director of the cult British comedy TV show Spaced Edgar has gone on to direct the two biggest British comedy films in recent years - Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Today he plays tunes from his record collection and explains how certain music comes to be used in certain parts of films. There’s also an insight into his favourite work in other soundtracks. It HAS to be! ;)

I'm hoping the Herb Alpert song is the theme to Casino Royale.
  • Joe_g
    wow, a quite varied list
(I know that you probably were impatiently waiting for my approbation)

"The Slew" as in Kid Koala + Wolfmother ?
  • stayhandsome
Jarvis Cocker has to be 'Slush'.
  • Wrong!
  • stayhandsome
Damnit! I thought you might be going for a wintery theme. A clue...?
  • M.
Metric = Black Sheep, Scott Pilgrim version?! =D

ARGH, if I can just figure out what DN stands for, I would know the final mysterious band that contributes tracks for the film! Who could have possibly composed Matthew Patel's little number?!
  • It's staring you in the face!
  • MarkoP
    Dan Nakamura?
  • MarkoP
    Focus - Hocus Pocus
    Beck - Infagitable

I love Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band i guess Canyons Of Your Mind, & keeping my fingers crossed for Wannabe Be In LA - Eagles Of Death Metal. Either way i'm really going to enjoy whatever tracks you play.
  • Paul Williams HAS to be "Hell Of It"! Please say yes! Wait a tick...I live in the States, can I even listen to this? I'm hoping I can online.
  • SarahAC
I'm pretty sure you can. I was able to listen to the Simon Pegg one from a couple of weeks ago, so it defo works outside of the UK
  • AmberGrindstaff
Queen.. did you play The Night Comes Down ?
Jarvis - Dont Let Him Waste Your Time? *video is great*
  • carrieanna
Ooo, I'm so excited. I needed some new music influences. Am a bit tired of what I've had in my rotation for the past few months.

...speaking of lists, my local PBS station's "Britcom" blog named SOTD as their #3 pick of British films of all time. Pretty cool!

    Joe Cornish haha
Excited to find out which one you'll choose!
  • Is the Ennio Morricone from Cinema Paradiso? I mean, I know it's probably from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but CP is one of my favorite soundtracks ever.
  • SarahAC
Brilliant. Can't wait to hear it all.
I'm particularly excited that you're playing a Joe Cornish song.
My money is on Santam of Quolace, but really any Cornballs song will be fantastic.
Also special yays for Bonzos and Madness in there too!
  • No Jon Spencer Blues Explosion?
  • Yes! Ennio! I'm hoping for my current favourite of his, The Extasy Of Gold. That song gives me the chills whenever I hear it.
  • My money's on Sontum of Quolace from Conballs and maybe something from Bugsy Malone from Mr. Williams. I would love to be correct.
  • M.
Still can't figure out DN. Excellent program, though! I only caught the last handful of songs, but enjoyed it thoroughly. Just have to wait for iPlayer to release it now...

Got a kick out of "All Night Garage," it's very deserving of a place in standard Christmas repetoire.
