spooky - i just put up a blog about owls…!

is that someone started to write ‘faculty’ along the edge of the book, and then given up?!

great, as ever. (and meant to say nice to see you in the video blog.)

i watched the un-tv version of Pride and Prejudice last night. Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennett!! i was surprised. and Penelope Wilton being the lovely aunty.

    Love the lighting in this.
    And the owl.
    And the Pilgrim book.
    And the ghostly-swinging-Cera.

Let’s just say I’m quite fond of the whole photo. 😀

Wow, this is probably one of my favorites you’ve taken. That light and how it’s illuminating the snow makes it all very relaxing, and the owl and the Cera - I like it. Always good to see one of the books close at hand, too. I may want to frame this one, actually.

    • SarahAC

LOL! Michelle we wrote almost exactly the same response to this one!

    Mwuahahahaha this movie will rock.

Wow. What cameras are being used for this? Since I have no experience (yet) with pro cameras Why does the camera film in 4:3 but crop to 2:35:1? BTW If it weren’t for Shaun I wouldn’t have written 3 screenplays, and I wouldn’t want to become a director, and I wouldn’t have wasted 10,000 on a Ag HVX200 and some equipment. Your my hero.

    • Mark G.

Look’s like they’re shooting 35mm framed for 1:1.85. Almost all 35mm cameras film a 4:3 frame by default (aka ‘Academy’ or 1:1.33 aspect). Depending on how the camera is prepared, the shaded areas above may actually be ‘filmed’ but they’re never intended to be seen (unless the shot needs to be reframed later on, but that tends to be rare).

1:2.35 on 35mm is shot either with anamorphic lenses which ‘squeeze’ a 1:2.35 image into the native 4:3 frame (i.e. the ‘Die Hard’ movies), or on ‘Super-35’ which uses a non-anamorphic lens on a larger area of 35mm than Academy. Super-35 can be cropped to 1:2.35, 1:1.85 or 4:3 (‘Titanic’, ‘Apollo 13’).

I’m assuming Edgar and Bill chose to shoot 1:1.85 on “Scott Pilgrim” for creative and/or practical reasons - more vertical space, less light required, more compact cameras and versatile lenses, less complicated visual effects etc.

That’s a very cool shot of Mr. Cera.

More cameras should come with their own owls.
