Video Archives: Bastardo ~ Charlotte Hatherley - dir. Edgar Wright (2005)
Here’s the last video I directed for Charlotte Hatherley and indeed my last music video to date!*
Again it comes from her magnificent GREY WILL FADE album (look for her amazing third album later this year) and it features a star studded cast of David Walliams, Simon Pegg, Lucy Davis, Lauren Laverne, Alice Lowe and Julia Davis.
This video cost 6K and was the result of a lot of hard work and pulled favours. It took so long to complete that it still exhausts me to watch. But there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this rapid fire clip and I’m very proud of what we managed to achieve.
Enjoy!
*Some of my early, early pre Spaced music videos included clips for Ruth and The High Llamas. I will try and unearth these sometime, along with other nascent efforts.
BRILLIANT music video. There are no words as of yet in the English language to adequately describe how cool the style is. Just one little problem: the thought of David Walliams as a Latin dreamboat caused so much cognitive dissonance that I was thrown into a giggle fit for most of the video. Ah, well. Great work, as always!
I read more Bunty and Judy annuals as a kid than any boy should. I shouldn’t have immediately recognized so many of the tropes in the video.
This is my favorite of all the videos. I laugh when i see Simon singing “Gone back to Mexico”. I cant even imagine the work it took to make this. Superb!
I have always loved this video!! Plus love Charlotte’s tunes!! Thanks for all the video posts!!
Thanks for the surge of video archives. They are all great! Looking forward to the nascent efforts appearing one day …
great song, and great video. doesn’t 2005 seem like a lifetime ago!
lauren laverne is a legend - she gave parenting advice to soon to be father mark watson, over the phone in the middle of the night at his show.
yes any old stuff would be fascinating - the nascent-ier the better!
There’s currently a pitcher on the Philadelphia Phillies named Antonio Bastardo, and obviously this should be his theme song when he enters a game.

You did a Superb Job Edgar!
Its my favorite track from Grey Wil Fade
Didn’t Bryan O’Malley originally do some animation for this video?
It all makes sense now!
Or was that another Charlotte video?
Cool video! Great job. And Walliams looks awesome
